Knowledge Is a Stream of Light

Knowledge is a stream of light and thought together — just as a river is a stream of water, soul and spirit substances flow from mind to mind.

Just as a river has a name and a source, so a channel of spirit has a name and a source. There are long rivers and short rivers; some run here and some run there. The destination of a river is known, but to find the source of a great river is a feat. Why? Because a great river twists and turns, and can draw its source from any one — or a number — of mountain heights. It flows through jungle at one point, then a valley, then a desert, in many places at once, and these can lie hundreds if not thousands of miles apart. Such is the mystery of the greatest of all rivers — the Nile, some four thousand miles in length.

A stream of consciousness is the flow of one mind into other minds; it finds fresh channels and many places, all of them full of experience — life and death, creatures, wisdom, events of light, and so much more. To find the headwaters, the source, is a journey; and often, if the channel is long, it must include changes in time. One must travel to reach the source. So too a man may be long or short in his reach to his own source — his fountain of life, so to speak.

And not all explorers agree on the source of any great river, for the source itself can change with the coming of new rains from some new mountain height. One says it rises on this mountain; another comes and finds a path upon that one. A spring rain on any nearby peak alters the configuration of the river and its source, and can fool the most meticulous explorer with a new and unknown discovery. After a mountain rain, a new flood of water can appear — a channel once dry and hidden becomes, all at once, an unexplored flow of the whole river, at a new height, in some miraculous way a new source upon another mountain.

The river is the channel, and the channel is the river.

Where does it begin? Look up, my friends — look to where the clouds gather and form the rain that flows down into the channel.

One day it is there, and visible.

Mantra means to focus thought, or literally the act of concentrated thinking. It is thought that separates men from the animals and internally it is the same, for the soul has within it animal traits of nature. It is the thought which is the 'rope' upon which the higher self or 'pure self' can climb out of the invisible soul substances of the animal-soul. In our teaching, it is also important to tame the animal and not to kill it. And music and mantras are one means by which the animal soul is tamed and blessed, and this animal soul can become a great blessing in our progress in spiritual nature.
